Basically ... the more alpaca people you know, the easier it is to sell your alpacas. Get involved!...

Really - the more you entrench yourself in the Alpaca community, the more you'll learn about improving your herd's genetic makeup, fiber quality ... and the more contacts you'll have to cross-sell, cross-breed, and network for people looking for a particular blood line, etc....

Plus, what I love most is that even after years of wear, an alpaca sweater knitted from natural-colored fiber looks brand new because it doesn't ever fade. Alpacas with more than one color of fleece, like a pinto, will produce a gorgeous tweed fiber that is prized among hand spinners and knitters....

In fact - Two black alpacas, one of the more prized colors, produce a black cria 75 percent of the time. The other colors are not that predictable....

Everyone - it doesn't have to be so hard if you take the PARADOXICAL approach of letting go of your desired outcome, and instead focus entirely on finding out how to HELP your new friend :-) (Notice I said friend instead of prospect? Doesn't that feel better already?)...

Some weavers even buy fiber or yarn from a particular animal – much the same way that knitters look for yarn from the same dye lot for consistent color!...

Subject: Re:Is alpaca fiber only useful for winter clothes? - by: fionapear

Yes, and although the lighter colors can be dyed, many yarns and products are made with the natural color fiber....

Yeah but did you know, alpaca genetics are not completely understood, and virtually any color in either the sire or the dam's lineage can show up in a cria....

Subject: Re:Which season should I breed my alpacas? - by: fionapear

Newborn crias (baby alpacas) fare better during mild weather. If it's too hot or too cold, the cria may be stressed....

Subject: Re:Do I need a good local vet? - by: fionapear

Of course, most breeders also learn to give their alpacas vaccination injections (and how to trim their toenails) and will be more than happy to show you how to do it yourself....
